5 Journaling Prompts for When You Feel Overwhelmed

Feeling overwhelmed is not weakness. It is your mind telling you that it needs room to breathe.

Journaling creates that room. But when everything feels heavy, starting is the hardest part. These five prompts are your way in.

1. What am I carrying right now that isn't mine to carry?

Family expectations. Other people's worries. The pressure to appear okay when you're not. Write it out. Name it. Some of what weighs you down belongs to someone else.

2. What does my body feel right now?

Anxiety lives in the body before it reaches our thoughts. Where do you feel it? Tight shoulders? A clenched jaw? Breathe into that place and write what you notice.

3. What would I tell my best friend if they felt this way?

We are so much kinder to others than we are to ourselves. Write the words you would say to someone you love.

4. What is one small thing I can control today?

When everything feels too big, find something small. A glass of water. A five-minute walk. One email. One small step forward.

5. What do I need right now, and can I give it to myself?

Rest. Quiet. To be heard. To feel less alone. Ask yourself honestly. Then write what it would look like to meet that need today.
